The Education Committee of the Geological Survey of Alabama/State Oil and Gas Board is an informal volunteer group of staff members dedicated to supporting high-quality science education in the State of Alabama. The group raises money with a charity golf tournament in the spring, and small amounts of money come from sales of a fossil field-trip guidebook and T-shirts. This money is used in a variety of ways, but always with the goal of improving science education.

Current and past outreach activities of the committee include:

• Leading an annual fossil field workshop for teachers in the Black Belt
• Leading other workshops in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Alabama Science Teachers Association and the Legacy summer teacher workshop
• Donating fossils, other geologic specimens, and publications to teachers, schools, and science centers
• Assisting with school activities such as science fair judging and guest speakers
• Developing a fossil kit, which is loaned to schools on request
• Financial and technical support for water festivals, state science and engineering fair, Legacy Envirobowl, and other science-education events in Alabama
• Operating fossil digs for children in conjunction with festivals in the state
• Cosponsoring publication of the Alabama Paleontological Society's report on the Steven C. Minkin Paleozoic Footprint Site (see www.alabamapaleo.org/monograph.html)
